Film: Eleanor the Great

Directed by Scarlett Johansson, 2025, USA, Rated PG‑13, 98 minutes

Eleanor Morgenstein (June Squibb), a 94‑year‑old widow from Florida, relocates to New York City to live with her daughter and grandson. Feeling invisible and adrift, she begins to invent a story that isn’t hers, passing off the life of her friend Bessie as her own. Journalism student Nina (Erin Kellyman) befriends Eleanor, drawn by her charisma and tales, but as Eleanor’s narrative spreads, the deception tightens its hold. The film explores grief, truth, identity, and the perils of longing for connection. Eleanor the Great was nominated for the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes and won the Deauville Audience Award.
