Directed by Cristian Mungiu, 2026, Romania/Norway, Not Rated, 146 minutes, subtitled
Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve star as Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple who move with their five children to a remote Norwegian village. Initially welcomed by their progressive neighbors, the family comes under scrutiny when bruises are discovered on their teenage daughter, setting off an investigation that exposes profound differences over religion, parenting, cultural identity, and the authority of the state. Director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) constructs a morally complex drama that continually challenges assumptions about its characters. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Fjord was called a “brilliantly knotted social drama” by Variety, while RogerEbert.com praised it as a “thorny, riveting” exploration of extremism and polarization.
