Between 1928 and 1950, Edward Wales Root (1884-1956) acquired more than two dozen watercolors and drawings by artist Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967). The two met in January 1929 and thereafter became good friends, engaging in a twenty-five year conversation about their mutual enthusiasm for art, music, and nature. Poetic Passages features Munson Museum of Art’s collection of 24 artworks by Burchfield and 39 letters between Burchfield and Root as well as a substantial collection of related artwork and archival material from the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, N.Y.
